What You Need To Know About Skin Cancer

You could be at risk for skin cancer if you spend a lot of time out in the sun without protecting your skin. You have an even greater risk of developing skin cancer if you:

  • Have fair skin and freckles
  • Tend to sunburn easily
  • Have a family history of skin cancer

To protect your skin from sun damage and skin cancer, you need to:

  • Apply sunscreen of at least SPF 15 or higher daily
  • Apply a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher if you plan to be outside for an extended period
  • Apply a sunscreen of SPF 50 or higher if you have fair skin and burn easily
  • Try to avoid being in direct sunlight between 10 AM and 2 PM
  • Wear protective clothing, including a hat and sunglasses
  • Avoid tanning booths

It’s also helpful to self-check your skin regularly to check for abnormal moles and suspicious areas of skin. Abnormal moles include moles that are:

  • Large, with a diameter greater than 6 millimeters
  • Poorly defined, with ragged, irregular borders
  • Not uniform in shape or asymmetrical
  • New or that has regrown after the previous removal

Suspicious areas of skin include skin that is red, scaly, itchy, bleeding, or oozing and doesn’t resolve.

If you notice any moles or abnormal areas of skin, schedule an appointment with our dermatologist as soon as you can.
