Spotting the Signs How To Identify Skin Cancer Early

Skin-Doctor-Looking-For-Suspicious-Mole

Did you know that everyone is at risk of developing skin cancer? It’s one of the most common types of cancer. Recognizing the signs early is crucial because early-stage skin cancer is more easily treatable. Dr. Jay Geller and Cindy Guan, PA-C at The Dermatology Specialists provide comprehensive dermatology services, including diagnosing and treating skin cancer. They offer two convenient locations in Chester and Hackettstown, NJ.

What You Need to Know About Skin Cancer

It’s a good idea to regularly examine your skin, especially areas frequently exposed to the sun, as excessive sun exposure is the leading cause of skin cancer. When performing a self-exam, look for the following signs:

  • Moles with poorly defined, ragged borders
  • Asymmetrical moles
  • Moles larger than 6 millimeters in diameter
  • Moles that have regrown after removal
  • Moles that itch, ooze, or bleed

You must visit your dermatologist for a professional skin examination if you notice these symptoms. If your dermatologist finds any abnormal moles or tissue, a biopsy may be performed to determine whether the tissue is benign, abnormal, or cancerous.

Tips for Preventing Skin Cancer

You can help reduce your risk of skin cancer by:

  • Avoiding tanning beds
  • Using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 daily
  • Applying sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher if spending extended time outdoors
  • Staying out of direct sunlight between 10 AM and 2 PM, when UV rays are most intense
