COMMON CONDITIONS WE TREAT

ACNE

Acne is treated with topical and oral medications as well as with over-the-counter products. Treatment is individualized based on each patient's condition and lifestyle and will be discussed during the visit. Acne, which can potentially be quite disfiguring, can almost always be treated today with modern medications. For more information, please visit:

Blackhead (open comedo)

Nodular Acne

Pustule

Whitehead (Closed comedo)

ROSACEA

Rosacea is a common condition in which triggers such as sunshine, heat or alcohol often cause a patient's face, particularly the cheeks, to become red and inflamed, frequently with small pustules. Treatment options include topical and oral antibiotics and other medications, and determining a patient's triggers so that they can be avoided. Sunscreen with an SPF 30 is recommended. For more information, please visit: www.rosacea.org

We treat a wide variety of rashes in patients ranging from infants to the elderly. A superficial biopsy is sometimes necessary to diagnose the condition and determine appropriate treatment. This is a simple procedure which can be done in the office on the day of your visit.

Eye Irritation

Bumps and Pimples

Skin Thickening

MOLLUSCUM CONTAGIOSUM

Molluscum contagiosum, an infectious condition common in children, can be treated easily with a topical blistering agent that we can apply during your visit. Patients may develop blistering of the treated area within 24 hours following application. Molluscum warts can also be treated with freezing or removal. Widespread infection with the virus often requires multiple applications of the blistering agent which can be done as frequently as every 2 weeks. Home therapy with preparations such as Compound W is often helpful as well. For more information, please visit: www.aad.org

WARTS

Warts are common lesions caused by a virus. In fact, the term verruca vulgaris means "common wart." Once a patient is infected with the virus, warts may continue to occur over a lifetime. While warts are not malignant (although certain types such as genital warts can cause cancerous lesions to develop), they are contagious and need to be treated. Treatment options include a topical blistering agent or liquid nitrogen; both of which may result in blistering within 24 hours of treatment. Simple removal may be performed as well. The larger a wart is, the more likely a patient will require multiple treatments which can be done as frequently as every 2 weeks. A patient may elect to have a wart surgically removed, particularly when other treatments have failed. This is a simple procedure and can be performed during your visit. Because warts are viruses, they can recur no matter what the treatment but we will do whatever possible to remove them in the most effective and hopefully permanent manner. PSORIASIS

Psoriasis is a condition in which the turnover of skin cells is much more rapid than normal. Psoriasis is a chronic condition which results in scaly red plaques throughout the body, most commonly on the elbows and knees. It is frequently genetic in origin. A number of treatment options are available from topical medications to ultraviolet light therapy. Some patients with more severe cases have elected treatment with new "biologic" medications. These can be very effective but can have serious side effects, so we will discuss them with you in detail before you commence treatment if you are interested. We have an ultraviolet light box here at the office, and patients for whom phototherapy is prescribed may visit at any time during normal business hours; an appointment is not needed. As each patient has different needs and concerns, treatment is individualized. For more information, please visit: www.aad.org and www.psoriasis.org
